FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

Paul Manktelow.  FIV is a retrovirus with worldwide distribution.  Infection is most common in middle aged to older male cats that have access to outdoors.  The major route of transmission of the virus is thought to be through biting so cats who fight or who have a history of cat bite abscesses are commonly infected.  FIV virus is similar in some respects to the human virus HIV, in that it results in an immunodeficiency syndrome after a period of apparent health with no symptoms. This article goes through the signs of FIV and some advice for managing an FIV positive cat.
