Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Paul Manktelow.  cats faceThis article gives you an overview of this relatively common disease in cats.  Hyperthyroidism in cats is a disease of the thyroid glands, These are two glands situated in the neck either side of the trachea (windpipe).  The thyroid glands are responsible for producing hormones which control the rate of metabolism and hyperthyroidism is an overproduction of these hormones.  Cats who suffer from hyperthyroidism have an increased metabolic rate and the signs of the disease relate to this increase.  It is usually a disease of older cats and there is no breed or sex disposition.
