Paul Manktelow. Inflammatory bowel disease is the most common cause of chronic intestinal disease in dogs. The cause is often unknown, and diagnosis is made by exclusion of other diseases. Diagnosis may therefore be time-consuming and frustrating. There are various therapies which can be tried, often in succession if there is no response. This article describes the possible causes, signs, diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in dogs. The article will give pet owners a greater understanding of this disease and explains the role that management changes such as dietary changes may play in the treatment of the disease, as well as the reasoning for the various treatments that may be used.
